Pro-Ject The Classic Sub-Chassis Turntable

This model has been phased out and replaced by The Classic Evo turntables that comes with Ortofon Quintet Red cartridge installed.

Launched in 2016 in conjunction with Pro-ject Audio’s 25th anniversary, The Classic Sub-Chassis Turntable is inspired by famous turntables of the 50’s and 60’s (like the legendary Lenco L75, Thorens & Linn). The traditional wood frame sub-chassis is marvelous. It’s a timeless classic.

Thanks to the modern damping materials TPE (Thermo Plastic Elastomers) below the main platter, it very effectively isolates the platter and tonearm from the resonances of the motor and main plinth. It utilised Japanese ball bearing below the tonearm for extra smooth movement.

This results in an award winning product with high demand. Everybody wants a piece of this turntable.

Pro-ject Audio products come with 2-year local warranty.

Product Description

Pro-Ject The Classic offers classic look and innovative high-end technology

This turntable makes use of traditional frame design which was established by the famous turntable manufacturers of the 50’s and 60’s. It uses a compact simple and elegant form factor. The Classic incorporates a combination of approved belt drive design using a low noise AC motor with an ultra precision frequency DC driven AC generator for ultimate speed stability. Advanced technology is used for decoupling and the completely new designed tonearm.

The Platter & Sub-platter

The heavy aluminium main platter construction utilises advanced thermo plastic elastomers (TPE*) for optimising resonance behaviour.

A drawback for most of the old designs was the platter. Casted platters all have been heavy (which is good for speed constancy and low wow and flutter) but suffered very much from ringing effects which again caused colouration of the sound. The platter of The Classic is precisely machined out of a special aluminium alloy again damped with TPE*, which offers special damping abilities. The sub-platter / main bearing construction we use is similar system as on the Debut. It is made of hardened steel/ Bronze bushing/ Teflon bearing mirror, which results in very smooth low noise running smoothness of the bearing.

The main difference to the Debut bearing are the tolerances which are by factor 10 lower and therefore more precise (0.005%). Especially the subplatter is a very sophisticated part which is accurately machined and guarantees a very good isolation between bearing noise and the platter itself.

New Carbon / Aluminium Tonearm

The radical new designed Classic Tonearm is the result of 25 years of experience in mechanical construction.

The tonearm tube is made out of a sandwich of Carbon and Aluminium : Carbon for stiffness and speed, Aluminium for better damping. The Cardan bearing assembly with pinpoint Zircon bearing provides ultra low friction. A new expensive Japanese ball bearing allows a better lead of the tonearm wire and increases the free movement of the arm. The counterweight incorporates a TPE* damper which allows us to reduce the amplitude of the tonearm cartridge resonance frequency by 50%.

This turntable allows azimuth and VTA adjustment to accommodate a variety of cartridges and turntable mats. Different counterweight for cartridges up to 25 grams are available as an option.

The standard version comes with Ortofon 2M Silver moving magnet cartridge. This is a step up from Ortofon 2M Red by implementing pure silver coils instead of standard copper. However, as the tonearm offers excellent damping and flexibility as well, its effective mass can be called middle heavy, so it is also a very good partner for MC cartridges.

EISA Awards, 2016 – European Turntable 2016-2017

Released to celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary, the timeless, traditional look of The Classic hides plenty of up-to-date engineering aimed at making this two-speed turntable as plug-and-play as possible. The main chassis plate rests inside an elegant wooden frame on six elastomer balls that provide some measure of isolation, while the inner circumference of the precisely-machined 2.1kg aluminium platter is also damped with a similar material. The deck is pre-fitted with a hybrid carbon/alloy tonearm that offers the potential to unleash even greater potential with better pick-ups, and rounds off one of the most stylish, snappy-sounding and user-friendly vinyl sources around. A new classic is born!

Customers Reviews

Overall I think that the Classic is a very good turntable. It certainly represents the next logical step up in performance within the Project line of turntables.

I am extremely pleased with the Classic. forum

The classic did an exceptional job of separating the vocal harmonies. Detail levels were good, and the presentation was relaxed with an extended top end and agile bass.

Pro-Ject’s ‘The Classic’ is a modern deck with a degree of retro charm. Clever technology meets a classic design, and the result is a worthy contender at the price. A better cartridge wouldn’t go Amiss, and a revised anti-skate system would be a major plus too. Nevertheless, the Classic is a wonderful turntable with excellent sonics and plenty of scope for future upgrades. Recommended. (April 20, 2017)

By designing something positively affordable for its quarter-century, Pro-Ject has come up with a turntable that can hold its head high for the celebration. The Classic is simply and neatly styled and turns in an excellent

performance. There is plenty of scope to upgrade it further and I can see it winning many friends. Equally, I can’t wait to see what the company has up its sleeve in five years time for its 30th!

The Classic is certainly a sophisticated turntable and its timeless elegance is brought right up to date by the carbon fibre construction of the tonearm. This arm matches well with the supplied Ortofon 2M Silver cartridge and sound-wise it turns in a great performance that’s particularly at home with vocals and jazz. All in all, The Classic is a perfect way to mark a 25th anniversary.

Hi-Fi Choice, November 2016

Talent and beauty is a rare combination – very few possess both. But Pro-Ject’s The Classic has plenty of each… Full-bodied sound with plenty of punch and drive…Good sense of dynamics and decent timing.

What HiFi Magazine (Sep 18, 2017)

The Classic sets new accents optically as well as sonically. The very well made table, with which the manufacturer wants to celebrate is 25th anniversary, plays to the gallery with its quiet, homogeneous and more from the depths constructed space.

A very mature appearance!
